Open Payments is a national disclosure program from CMS that promotes a more financially transparent and accountable healthcare system.   Drug and medical device companies (Reporting Entities) must report to CMS payments or transfers of value they make to certain health care providers and teaching hospitals (collectively referred to as ‘covered recipients’)  for research, meals, travel, gifts, speaking fees, and more.    In 2021, Open Payments expanded the definition of a covered recipient to include five additional provider types: physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetist and anesthesiologist assistants, and certified nurse midwives.    It is important for you to be familiar with the program, including what may be reported and how you can review data that may be attributed to you.   In February 2022 the reporting entities will begin submitting the Program Year 2021 data which may include you. In April 2022 you will have the opportunity to review and if necessary dispute your attributed data before it is published in June 2022.     In order to participate in the pre-publication review and dispute process, you must be registered in the Open Payments System. Registration for the Newly Added Covered Recipients is set to open in the beginning of 2022.
